Humanities I - Antiquity

For the 2026-27 academic year, our studies will focus on Antiquity.

Materials

In additon to the books below, students will need 2 100-page college-ruled sewn composition books.

Cottage Press
Providence Prep will order Cottage Press books together for a group discount.

Students should continue using their Book of Centuries, if they have already started one.
Each family will need at least one copy of Poetry Reader IV from Cottage Press.

History
Students will need their own printed copy of each of the following books.

Each family should have one history atlas. The same atlas is used in Humanities II.

Literature Books:
Students will need their own printed copy of each of the following books. NOTE: Sophocles I and Aeschylus II are also used in Humanities II.

Mara, Daughter of the Nile, by Eloise Jarvis McGraw (fun adventure/romance by the author of The Golden Goblet)

The Heroes, by Charles Kingsley (stories from Greek myth, centering on Perseus, Jason and the Argonauts, and Theseus)

The God-King, by Joanne Williamson (Egyptian prince protagonist during the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah)

Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, by Lew Wallace (epic spanning continents and decades starring a Sadducee who seeks revenge against an old Roman friend after being enslaved, only to find himself caught up following Jesus)

The Eagle of the Ninth, by Rosemary Sutcliffe (the tale of a Roman centurion who befriends a Briton slave and goes to find the lost eagle of his father's legion in northern Britain)
